Elevated for sensitive groups
Everyone should limit outdoor exertion. Sensitive groups (young children, pregnant people, older adults (65+), and anyone with heart or lung disease) should stay indoors when possible and avoid outdoor activity.
Wildfire smoke from Canada
Seasonal haze can reach the North Country Trail across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Canadian wildfires can send fine particle pollution (PM2.5) and smoke across the UP NCT corridor — from western trailheads near Ironwood through Tahquamenon Falls to the eastern approaches toward St. Ignace — even when the local forecast looks sunny. Hazy skies and elevated air quality index (AQI) readings are common signs.
Before long hikes or a shuttle day with young children, pregnant travelers, or older adults, check the air quality guidance on this page and consider shorter outdoor time when AQI is elevated. Tap corridor map markers for local AQI at trailheads and access points.

The North Country Trail runs the length of the UP — from the Wisconsin border near Ironwood to the Mackinac Bridge at St. Ignace. We are based at Tahquamenon Falls, so these access points are outside our regular shuttle service area. Know before you go
- Park ↔ off-park (one stop in the park): book at least 24 hours ahead online.
- Off-park ↔ off-park with no park stop: book at least 48 hours ahead online.
- Need a trip sooner? Call (906) 291-3422.
- Check trail conditions and air quality (including Canadian wildfire smoke) before long NCT hikes — especially with young children, pregnant travelers, or older adults.
- At NCT County Road 500, allow extra load time for packs and gear. Confirm party size when you call.
- Non-service pets: $5 each when offered. Service animals ride free.
- Shuttle capacity is limited — book early on peak summer weekends.

In-park falls legs: $25 per adult, +$7 each additional person, +$5 per pet. Same-day Upper ↔ Lower RT: $40 first person (+$12 each additional).
